Chip retired from the Air Force in 1990 and moved to Apache Junction, located on the eastern end of the valley. Since his retirement he has worked for the U.S.A.F. government contractor, Arizona Dept of Weights and Measures, and as an employee of Boeing.
During this time he also became involved with horse ownership rights and became a member of the Superstition Horsemen’s Association. His involvement with SHA concerning Horse owners’ rights and Forest service access issues led him to be elected president of the Superstition Horsemen’s Association in 1998, a position he held until 2006. He has been active in City, County and State governments and has also worked with the Tonto National Forest on access and trail issues. He has also been a Black Stallion Reading Program volunteer at elementary schools throughout the valley. He is a member of the Arizona Dept of Ag’s Large Animal advisory board and has helped create a state-wide program that facilitates the rescue of large animals during emergencies. Chip was instrumental in organizing the Pinal County Animal Rescue Operation and worked as part of the Pinal County Emergency Management Dept. It’s no surprise that Chip is passionate about protecting Horsemen’s Rights and we are fortunate to have him as our president.

LeAnn Wertz
Board Member |
My husband and I moved to Arizona in 1972. Prior to that we had served in the medical mission field in India for ten years. Now Wayne is semi-retired, but still assists in surgery, and I get to do his insurance claims.
I also am treasurer of the Glendale Woman's Club and President of the Glendale Equestrian Club which is sponsored by the Glendale Parks & Recreation Department. I have joined the PAAC (Project Aesthetics Advisory Committee) in the City of Peoria which is working on the New River Channel from Grand Avenue to Skunk Creek. Maybe one day there will be trails along the New River Wash.
I have two horses boarded at Hensley's Stables on 67th Ave. In my spare time I do ceramics. I am waiting for the day there are trails up Agua Fria and New River going North so we will have somewhere to ride our horses again in the West Valley.
